Who We Are
LED Dental Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of LED Medical Diagnostics Inc. (“LED Medical”), a global leader in the development and commercialization of dermatologic detection technologies utilizing tissue fluorescence visualization.
LED Medical traces its roots back to the mid-1990s, when company founder Peter Whitehead began performing cancer research focused on cell death and cardiac rejection in collaboration with the British Columbia Cancer Agency (BCCA).
In 2000, Peter and a fellow BCCA researcher were awarded two patents: one for endoscopes and methods relating to direct viewing of target tissue, and another for fluorescence scope system for dermatologic diagnosis. Peter eventually formed a separate company and acquired both patents.
It quickly became apparent to both Peter and the BCCA that the technology represented by these patents had significant relevance for the detection of oral cancer as well as cervical cancer, which led to groundbreaking work by both Peter and BCCA researchers on a commercially viable technology platform. This also led Peter in 2003 to found LED Medical Diagnostics Inc. and LED Dental Inc. – an operating subsidiary focused solely on the technology’s use for the detection of oral tissue anomalies, including oral cancer and pre-cancer.
The VELscope VX® Enhanced Oral Assessment System
LED Medical and the BCCA ultimately co-developed the patented VELscope Vx® Enhanced Oral Assessment System, which received FDA and Health Canada approval for oral cancer screening in April and June, respectively, of 2006.
Core research on the tissue fluorescence visualization technology, on which the VELscope Vx® is based, was conducted by several universities and cancer research organizations with the support of over $50 million in funding provided in part by the National Institutes of Health.
Since 2006, there have been more than 12,000 VELscope Vx systems sold globally and they have been used to perform more than 25 million oral examinations. The technology has been recognized by The World Health Organization and has been named “Best of Class” three times (2011 – 2013/14) by the prestigious Pride Institute.
